Hindu Cosmology: The Extraordinary Confluence of Ancient Spirituality and Modern Science

 


In Indian culture, science and religion have never been adversaries. In contrast to the conflict often seen in the Western world, India views these two as two sides of the same quest for truth and knowledge. The way the sages of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions explained the mysteries of the universe continues to astonish modern physicists today.

The Concept of Maya and Reality

According to the Hindu scientific approach, understanding divinity is essential to understanding the external world. Our scriptures state that the universe is older than even the gods and mankind. Here, the concept of Space-Time is based on the principle of 'Maya'. What we perceive as a 'solid' world is, in reality, fluid and illusionary. The ultimate goal of life is to attain 'Moksha' (Liberation) by freeing oneself from this illusion.

According to the sage Prashastapada, after the Dissolution (Laya) of the universe, the Supreme Power creates the cosmos once again. Minute Atoms (Anu) aggregate to generate cosmic winds, and Souls (Atman) assume appropriate bodies based on their past karmas.

The Cyclical Universe and the Calculation of Time

The most striking similarity between Hindu cosmology and Modern Physics lies in the Cyclical Nature of the universe. For a long time, the West viewed time as Linear—having a fixed beginning and a definitive end. Conversely, Indian philosophy views time as an Infinite Circle, where the end is actually the seed of a new beginning.

Lord Shiva's form as Nataraja is a symbol of this Cosmic Dynamics. The Damru (drum) in one hand represents the Primal Sound of creation—strikingly consistent with the modern 'Big Bang' theory—while the fire in his other hand signifies total destruction or Dissolution. This process continues incessantly from one 'Kalpa' (Aeon) to the next.

This concept is rooted in the theory of 'Eternal Return', suggesting that the universe is not a one-time event but a Repetitive Process. The events occurring now have occurred countless times before in the flow of Eternity and will occur again in the future. In modern science, this idea is known as the 'Oscillating Universe Theory', which accepts a series of cosmic Expansions and Contractions. When the universe reaches its ultimate limit, it dissolves back into zero through a 'Big Crunch', from which a new 'Big Bounce' is born.

Thus, Indian thinkers understood thousands of years ago that Energy is never destroyed; it merely changes form in this eternal dance of creation and vanishing. This global perspective teaches us that in this changing world, we are part of a Pure Consciousness that transcends the bonds of Space-Time.

Perspectives of Great Global Scholars

·         Professor Arthur Holmes: Writing about the Age of the Earth, he noted that long before Western scientists began thinking in this direction, Indian sages had provided astonishing concepts of the Earth’s existence in texts like the Manusmriti.

·         Alan Watts: According to this Harvard professor, concepts like 'Relativity' or 'Light Years' were not new to Indian philosophers. While the West used relativity to create the Atomic Bomb, Eastern culture used it for the evolution of 'Consciousness'.

·         Dick Teresi: The author of 'The God Particle' notes that Indian cosmologists were the first to estimate the Earth’s age to be over 4 billion years. Shiva’s Nataraja form is the symbol of this relentless cycle of Creation (Damru) and Destruction (Flame).

The Acceptance of Infinity

World-renowned scholar Huston Smith says that the spirit of India dwells in the 'Infinite'. While the West was entangled in boundaries and shapes, believing the universe to be only 6,000 years old, Indian sages were imagining ages and Galaxies as numerous as the grains of sand in the Ganges.

According to Guy Sorman, the Indian concept of 'Eternal Time' transformed European ideas. The Indian mind was more prepared to accept Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and the shifts in Astrophysics.

Scientific Consistency and the 'Cosmos'

Famous astronomer Carl Sagan, in his book 'Cosmos', admits that Hinduism is the only religion whose Time Scales are consistent with modern science.

·         One Day and Night of Brahma: 8.64 billion years.

·         This figure is approximately half the time elapsed since the Big Bang.

·         According to the Bhagavad Gita, a single day of Brahma spans thousands of Yugas, representing the cycle of cosmic Expansion and Contraction.

The Nasadiya Sukta of the Rigveda (Hymn of Creation)

“Then was not non-existent nor existent: there was no realm of air, no sky beyond it... There was darkness...”

This Sukta from the Rigveda raises the deepest questions about creation. It asks: whence did this creation come? If even the gods came after creation, who can truly know the origin? The courage to ask such questions is the hallmark of the Indian tradition of knowledge.

The Churning of the Ocean and Non-dualism (Advaita)

The mythological event of the Churning of the Ocean (Samudra Manthan) is a precise Symbolism of human consciousness and profound cosmic psychology. In Western culture, darkness and light or good and evil are often seen as opposing forces in permanent conflict, where one must eventually destroy the other.

However, according to Indian Philosophy, these two opposing forces are complementary aspects of the same Ultimate Truth. The churning between the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) is the process of accepting the Duality of life, where both Positive and Negative energies are essential to obtain the Nectar of Immortality (Amrit).

During this churning, the 'Halahal' (Primordial Poison) emerges first. This suggests that in any deep spiritual or Scientific Discovery, one must face terrible challenges and negativity before the final creation. Lord Shiva drinking this poison represents the capacity to absorb destructive elements and transform them into something auspicious. Just as Atomic Energy can be used for both creation and destruction, the powers of the universe are Neutral; it depends on our "churning" and Intention whether we extract poison or nectar.

Conclusion

Indian cosmology teaches us that there is no distinction between 'Self and the Universe'. All things are part of the same Supreme Element. This wisdom stands today as a bridge between science and spirituality.

            On February 28, 2026, an extremely rare and spectacular astronomical event is set to occur in the sky, known as a 'Planet Parade' or 'Planetary Alignment.' On this day, 6 planets of our solar system will be visible in a straight line (alignment) in the sky.

2. When is the best time to watch?

    Mars has always been a subject of curiosity for humans.Scientists believe that if there is a possibility of life on any planet after Earth, it is Mars.

1. Evidence of Water on Mars

    Water is essential for life. Evidence suggests that in the past, Mars had rivers, lakes, and perhaps even vast oceans.Even today, water is present in the form of ice at the Martian poles.NASA's rovers have also expressed the possibility of liquid water existing beneath the Martian surface.

2. Atmosphere and Life

    The atmosphere of Mars is much thinner than Earth's and consists of 95% carbon dioxide. There is very little oxygen. However, NASA’s 'MOXIE' device recently succeeded in producing oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, which will be crucial for future human habitation.

3. Could Microbes Exist There?

    Scientists are not looking for large animals or aliens on Mars; they are searching for microbes. Methane gas has been found in Martian soil, which on Earth is produced by living organisms. Therefore, it is believed that bacteria might still be alive beneath the surface.

The possibility of life on Mars is higher because it is similar to Earth in many ways:

NASA's Artemis Mission: Humanity's Return to the Moon

 



                 NASA's Artemis Mission is the largest project in the history of space science to date. Its primary objective is to send humans back to the Moon and establish basic facilities for permanent habitation there. The program is named after Artemis, the goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology, who is considered the twin sister of Apollo. Through this mission, NASA is set to create history by landing the first woman and the first person of color on the lunar surface. This is not limited to just a lunar visit; it is an attempt to clear the path for future Mars missions by discovering how to utilize the water and ice located at the Lunar South Pole.

        To complete this ambitious mission, NASA has developed the world’s most powerful rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), and an advanced spacecraft named Orion. The mission began in 2022 with the successful test of Artemis-1, in which an uncrewed craft orbited the Moon and returned safely to Earth. The next step is Artemis-2, where four astronauts will orbit the Moon and return. Subsequently, through the Artemis-3 mission, humans will step onto lunar soil again after decades. During this entire process, a space station called the Lunar Gateway will also be built, which will serve as a lab and habitation for astronauts while staying in the Moon's orbit. India is also playing an important role in this global endeavor. Under the Artemis Accords signed between India and the USA, both countries will provide mutual cooperation in space exploration, under which Indian astronauts may also join this mission in the future.

            The reason for choosing the Lunar South Pole is that sunlight is constantly available there, and there is a strong possibility of water in craters that remain permanently shadowed. If they succeed in separating oxygen and hydrogen from this water, rocket fuel can be produced on the Moon itself, which will bring a major revolution in the world of space exploration. For this mission, NASA, in collaboration with the company Axiom Space, has developed special new types of spacesuits called the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU). These suits are many times more advanced than the old suits of the Apollo missions because they are designed to withstand the extremely cold and harsh environment of the Lunar South Pole. The specialty of this suit is that it gives astronauts more freedom of movement, allowing them to walk and bend easily on the lunar surface. These suits do not just provide safety but function like a mini-spaceship that helps keep astronauts alive for hours on the Moon.

            On the other hand, the most important aspect of the Artemis mission is the Lunar Gateway, which will be a small space station orbiting the Moon. This Gateway will function as a temporary home and laboratory for astronauts while in lunar orbit. SpaceX's Starship is also an extremely vital part of this mission because NASA has selected it as the Human Landing System (HLS) to land astronauts on the Moon. It is the most powerful and fully reusable rocket to date, which, due to its massive size, can carry many astronauts and a large amount of equipment. The water discovered on the Moon will prove to be as precious as gold for this mission, as it is the main foundation for permanent human habitation. In this way, the Moon will act as a "Cosmic Gas Station," where crafts can be refueled for the journey to Mars.

     NASA has selected four astronauts for the Artemis II mission: Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover (the first Black astronaut), Mission Specialist Christina Koch (the first female astronaut), and Canada’s Jeremy Hansen. These four talented astronauts will travel to the far side of the Moon during an approximately 10-day journey. The names of the astronauts who will land on the lunar surface in the Artemis III mission have not been announced yet, but there will be diversity there as well. These astronauts are not only scientists but also trained test pilots who have been given specialized training to survive in extreme conditions. They will land on the Lunar South Pole and collect samples to be brought back to Earth for examination. The courage of these astronauts will open the way for ordinary people to go to the Moon in the future.

The Euclid Mission introduced the "Galactic Tuning Fork" in 2025, providing a new way to understand the history of the universe. This modern version updates Edwin Hubble’s 1926 diagram with advanced technology. It does not just show the shapes of galaxies but tells the story of how they are born and change over time.

          Modern Classification of Galaxies

The Euclid telescope studied millions of galaxies and divided this diagram into three main parts:

    • Right Side (Young Galaxies): These are blue-colored spiral galaxies. They are filled with gas and dust, and new stars are constantly being born there.
    • Middle Part (Transition Phase): This represents the stage when two galaxies collide. Euclid has discovered thousands of such "mergers".
    • Left Side (Old Galaxies): These are red-colored elliptical galaxies. They are mostly formed by the merger of several small galaxies, and the birth of new stars has almost stopped.

Major Discovery of 2025: "Secondary Nuclei"

A major success of the Euclid Mission is the discovery of 666 galaxies that have "two hearts" (two black holes).

    • What it is: Every large galaxy has a "Supermassive Black Hole" at its center. When a large galaxy swallows a smaller one, two distinct centers (nuclei) are visible initially.
    • Significance: This proves that galaxies are not "quiet" but grow through constant violent collisions.
    • Future Events: Eventually, these black holes collide, creating Gravitational Waves in the universe. Our own Milky Way is destined to merge with the neighboring Andromeda galaxy in this same manner.

Mapping Dark Matter

Euclid uses a technique called "Weak Gravitational Lensing" to map the invisible web of Dark Matter.

    • Light Bending: According to Einstein's theory, massive objects bend the path of light; Dark Matter does the same.
    • Distortion: As light from distant galaxies reaches Euclid, Dark Matter distorts or bends it.
    • Mapping: By measuring these slight changes in the shapes of millions of galaxies, scientists can identify where the invisible web of Dark Matter exists.

The Future of the Milky Way

While our galaxy currently seems peaceful, its future is dramatic and exciting:

    • The Great Collision: The Andromeda galaxy is heading toward us at 400,000 km/h. In about 4 to 5 billion years, it will collide with the Milky Way.
    • Milkomeda: After the merger, a giant elliptical galaxy will form, which scientists have named "Milkomeda".
    • Black Hole Union: The black holes at the centers of both galaxies (including our 'Sagittarius A*') will orbit each other and eventually merge, creating massive gravitational waves.
    • Fate of Earth/Sun: Earth or the Sun are unlikely to collide with another star because of the vast distances between them. However, our solar system might be thrown far from the galactic center due to gravity.
    • The End of Star Birth: Eventually, the new Milkomeda galaxy will use up its gas, and new star formation will stop. The galaxy will eventually become "Red and Dead".
Note: By the time these galaxies merge, the Sun will likely have become a 'Red Giant' and swallowed the Earth (in about 5 billion years), meaning humanity will likely no longer be on Earth.

Geminids Meteor Shower: The King of Meteor Showers (2025)

 


        The Geminids Meteor Shower is considered the "King of Meteor Showers" because it is the brightest and best meteor shower of the year. This spectacle will also be visible in India and Gujarat in 2025.

Here is the complete information regarding the 2025 Geminid Meteor Shower:

1. Peak Time 2025

    • Date: Night of December 13 to the morning of December 14.
    • Best Time: From 12:00 AM to 4:00 AM (Indian Standard Time). This is when the maximum number of meteors (Shooting Stars) are visible in the sky.

2. What's Special in 2025?

    • Moon Phase: On the night of December 13-14, the Moon will be in a "Waning Crescent" phase, meaning it will be approximately 30-35% illuminated. The Moon will rise after midnight (around 2:00 AM).
    • Advantage: The sky will be dark before the Moon rises (in the evening and until midnight), allowing the meteors to be clearly visible. Even after the Moon rises, Geminids are usually bright enough to be easily seen.
    • Rate: Under ideal conditions, you can observe 120 to 150 meteors per hour.

3. Where to Look in the Sky? (Viewing Direction)

    • Direction: These meteors appear to originate from the Gemini (Mithun) constellation.
    • Star Identification: Its origin point (Radiant Point) is near the bright stars 'Castor' and 'Pollux'.
    • Tip: You do not need to look directly at the Gemini constellation. Meteors can appear anywhere across the sky. It is better to look at a wide area of the sky by keeping your head straight up towards the Zenith.

4. Scientific Information (Origin)

        While meteor showers are generally caused by debris from Comets, the Geminids are different.

    • Source: The source is the dust and debris particles from the asteroid named '3200 Phaethon'.
    • Colour: Geminid meteors often appear yellowish or white and travel at a medium speed, making them easy to observe.

5. Best Viewing Tips

    1. Get Away from the City: Go to a dark spot away from city lights (Light Pollution). Rural skies are the best.
    2. No Telescope Needed: This is best observed with the naked eye. Do not use binoculars or a telescope as they limit your field of view.
    3. Be Patient: Allow your eyes at least 20-30 minutes to adjust to the dark. Avoid looking at mobile screens.
    4. Warm Clothes: Since it will be cold in December, keep warm clothes handy and watch the sky while lying down comfortably.

Other Major Annual Meteor Showers

Among the main meteor showers visible throughout the year, the Perseids are the most famous and reliable. This shower is active from mid-July to the end of August, and its 'Maximum Rate' (Peak) is on August 12-13, with 100 to 150 meteors visible per hour. At the start of the year, the Quadrantids are known for their short but intense 'Maximum Rate' (Peak), which occurs on January 3-4 with a rate of approximately 120 meteors per hour.

Furthermore, two meteor showers are associated with the debris of the famous Halley's Comet: the Eta Aquariids, which reaches its 'Maximum Rate' (Peak) on May 5-6 (50-60 per hour), and the Orionids, whose 'Maximum Rate' (Peak) is on October 21-22 (15-20 per hour). Other notable showers include the Lyrids, which gives a rate of 15 to 20 meteors per hour at its 'Maximum Rate' (Peak) on April 22. Finally, the Leonids, whose 'Maximum Rate' (Peak) is on November 17-18 (10-20 per hour), is famous for producing Meteor Storms approximately every 33 years.

    1. New Moon Nights (Amavasya) The Moon's light dims the stars. Therefore, the nights around the New Moon (3-4 days before and after Amavasya) are best for stargazing, as the Moon is either not in the sky or appears very thin.
    2. Non-Monsoon Seasons During the monsoon, the cloudy weather prevents clear viewing of the stars. Winter (October to February) and the beginning of Summer (March-April) are the best seasons for sky viewing, as the sky is clean and fog-free.
    3. Late Night Generally, the sky becomes cleaner and darker after 10 PM. The time just before early morning is also excellent.
    4. Planet Viewing If you specifically want to see a planet (like Jupiter, Saturn, or Mars), get information beforehand about its visibility time in the sky. Many apps and websites on the internet provide this information.
