The nature of time has captivated humanity for millennia, from the earliest philosophers to contemporary theoretical physicists. The desire to comprehend and potentially manipulate time is a universal pursuit. Intriguingly, long before Albert Einstein revolutionized physics with his theories of relativity or the concept of wormholes permeated science fiction, ancient Hindu scriptures like the Mahabharata and the Puranas offered profound, layered explorations of journeys through time.

These sacred texts feature narratives that strikingly parallel modern scientific principles such as Time Dilation, Wormholes, and even the Multiverse. This overview delves into these age-old concepts, drawing comparisons with current scientific models to explore the remarkable consonance between ancient insights and modern, cutting-edge science.

 The Universe's Rhythm: Time as Relative and Cyclical

A foundational tenet of Hindu cosmology is the view of time as cyclical rather than linear. Departing from the typical Western linear model, Hinduism depicts time as an endless succession of monumental, repeating cycles, each known as a Kalpa.

      • Example of Scale: A single day for the deity Brahma is described as equaling  $4.32$ billion human years.

This inherent cyclicality points toward a sophisticated understanding of how time functions on vastly different scales—an early, mythological foreshadowing of the modern scientific concept of relativity.

This cosmic clockwork includes the Yugas, or epochs: Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. The completion of these four Yugas marks one full cycle of cosmic time. The combined perspective of time as both relative and eternal closely resonates with modern physics' understanding of space-time and the variable nature of time flow.

 


Time Dilation in the Mahabharata: The Legend of King Kakudmi

One of the most frequently cited ancient narratives concerning time travel is the story of King Kakudmi and his daughter Revati from the Mahabharata.

Seeking the most suitable spouse for his daughter, King Kakudmi travels with Revati to the celestial dwelling of Brahma. After a very brief audience with the creator god, Kakudmi is told that an astonishing span of many thousands of years has elapsed on Earth during his short divine visit. All the potential suitors he had considered are long deceased, and the world has undergone drastic transformation.

This narrative shares an uncanny parallel with the scientific principle of Time Dilation, a consequence of Einstein's theory of relativity. Modern physics confirms that time can pass at differing rates, influenced by factors such as velocity and gravitational fields. King Kakudmi’s transit to Brahma’s realm implies a dimension or location where the flow of time is fundamentally altered, much like the effects experienced near the speed of light or an extremely massive gravitational body.

 


The Multiverse in Vishnu’s Cosmic Breath

Hindu cosmology ventures into concepts that align with contemporary theories regarding the Multiverse. In the Puranas, the deity Vishnu is depicted reclining upon the cosmic serpent Shesha. During his cosmic sleep, it is said that complete universes are created and annihilated with each breath he takes.

The notion of an infinite number of universes existing concurrently is a highly active area of investigation for modern physicists. Vishnu’s mythological power to spontaneously generate and dissolve universes finds a strong echo in the modern theoretical framework of parallel universes, albeit expressed through rich, poetic, and mythological imagery in the Hindu texts.

The theoretical scientific concept of a Wormhole—a hypothetical tunnel connecting two distinct points in space-time—finds a mythological counterpart within the Puranas and other Hindu writings.

Divine travelers, such as the sage Narada, are consistently described as possessing the ability to traverse both time and space effortlessly. Narada's journeys often span countless realms, suggesting a kind of cosmic shortcut between widely separated points in the space-time continuum.

      • Scientific Analogy: Wormholes, a prediction arising from Einstein’s equations, are theoretical conduits that could allow for near-instantaneous travel across vast astronomical distances.

The recurring motif of gods and sages crossing immense space and time instantly, frequently returning to find that centuries have passed, remarkably mirrors the concept of a wormhole, where space and time are effectively collapsed to enable rapid transit.

While these ancient sources do not furnish us with physics formulas, their imaginative depth directly addresses the core challenges modern science faces concerning the fundamental nature of time. Whether this ancient wisdom holds verifiable scientific accuracy remains the single biggest challenge for modern scientific inquiry.

In the realm of modern physics, time travel is more than science fiction; it is firmly rooted in established scientific theories.

      • General Relativity confirms that time is not a constant. Time Dilation is a experimentally verified phenomenon demonstrating that time’s flow is relative to gravity and velocity.
      • Wormholes, while theoretical, are predicted by Einstein's equations as potential passages for ultra-rapid travel.

However, any hypothetical mechanism for traveling backward in time introduces the profound philosophical and physical challenge of causality, most famously illustrated by the 'Grandfather Paradox,' which remains the most significant obstacle for scientists.

The Vastness of the Universe: An Amazing Mystery

    While looking at the stars in the night sky, we often wonder how vast this universe must be. Answering this question is almost impossible because the universe is so immense that even imagining it is difficult. Everything we see is just a tiny fraction of it.

The Size of the Universe

    According to scientists, the observable size of the universe is approximately 93 billion light-years. A light-year is the distance that light travels in one year. Since the speed of light is 300,000 kilometers per second, you can imagine how vast this distance is!

Our Earth is a small planet in the Solar System. Our Solar System is a part of the galaxy called the Milky Way, which contains an estimated 100 to 400 billion stars. The Milky Way itself is part of a group of galaxies called the Local Group, which includes many other galaxies like Andromeda.

Darkness and the Unknown

    A large part of the universe is invisible to us. Scientists believe that about 95% of the universe is made up of dark matter and dark energy, about which we know very little. Dark matter has gravitational force, but it does not interact with light, so we cannot see it directly. Dark energy is a mysterious force that is causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate.

The End of the Universe?

    The universe is constantly expanding. Where or when this expansion will stop is a big question. Some theories suggest that the expansion will continue forever, while others propose that one day it might contract.

    All these ideas make us even more curious about the vastness and mysteries of the universe. They remind us how small and insignificant we are in this vast cosmos. Yet, the curiosity and thirst for knowledge within us keep driving us to explore and uncover these mysteries.

Big Bang Theory

 


  • The Big Question for Humanity

One of the greatest questions for humankind has always been – “How did the universe come into existence?”
Some religious texts describe it as a creation of God, but modern science presents a very popular scientific explanation for the origin of the universe – known as the Big Bang Theory.

  • History of the Theory

·         1927: Belgian scientist Georges LemaĆ®tre first proposed the idea that the universe might have originated from a “Primordial Atom” – a single tiny point.

·         1929: American astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered that galaxies are moving away from each other. This meant the universe is constantly expanding.

·         Later, many scientists provided further evidence to strengthen this idea, and today it is the most widely accepted theory in the scientific community.

  • What Does the Big Bang Theory Say?

1.      About 13.8 billion years ago, the universe did not exist.

2.      There was only an extremely small, hot, and dense point – called a Singularity.

3.      Suddenly, a massive explosion occurred – which we call the Big Bang.

4.      After the explosion, the universe began expanding rapidly, and slowly gases, stars, planets, and galaxies were formed.

5.      Even today, the universe is still expanding.


 Cosmic calendar

  • Understanding through Examples

·         Balloon Example:
When we blow up a balloon, the dots on its surface move farther apart. In the same way, all the stars and galaxies in the universe are moving away from each other.

·         Popcorn Example:
When popcorn is heated, a tiny kernel bursts open and expands into something large. Similarly, from a tiny point, the universe exploded and expanded into something vast.

  • Scientific Evidence

1.      Galaxies Moving Away (Hubble’s Law):
Scientists observed that the light from galaxies is shifted toward the red end of the spectrum (Red Shift). This means galaxies are constantly moving away.

2.      Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB):
In 1965, two scientists discovered a special type of microwave radiation. This radiation is the remnant from the time when the universe started cooling after the Big Bang.

3.      Formation of Light Elements:
In the early stages of the universe, light elements like Hydrogen and Helium were formed. Even today, these are the most abundant elements in the universe.

  • Evolution of the Universe

·         First Second: Energy and fundamental particles were created.

·         Three Minutes: Light elements like hydrogen and helium were formed.

·         About 380,000 years later: The universe cooled, allowing light to travel freely – which we can still measure today as the CMB.

·         Billions of Years Later: Stars, galaxies, and planets were formed.

·         Today: The universe continues to expand, and new stars are still being born.

  • The Unsolved Mysteries

While the Big Bang Theory explains a lot, some questions remain unanswered:

·         Why did the Big Bang happen?

·         How did everything come out of nothing?

·         What existed before the Big Bang?

Science does not yet have definite answers to these questions.

            The Big Bang Theory shows us that the universe was born from a tiny point and has now grown to contain billions of galaxies. This theory is not only about science but also symbolizes humankind’s curiosity and quest for knowledge. Kakbhushundi’s Vision of the Multiverse

 



Hindu tradition also preserves the teachings of Kakbhushundi, an immortal sage in the form of a crow, who symbolizes devotion and wisdom. He is said to have witnessed the events of the Ramayana and Mahabharata countless times.

Kakbhushundi explains that there are infinite universes, and in each universe, avatars like Lord Rama manifest in their own unique ways. He further emphasizes the cyclical nature of creation—the universe is created, sustained, dissolved, and recreated in an endless cycle.

Time itself, he explains, is not linear but cyclical. The Yugas—Satya, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali—recur again and again, endlessly. In his dialogue with Garuda, Kakbhushundi describes how countless universes exist simultaneously, each with its own version of Rama’s story unfolding.

Spiritual Meaning

The purpose of these grand descriptions is not only cosmological but also deeply spiritual. By understanding the infinity of the cosmos and the endless cycles of creation, humans are reminded of their smallness within the vastness of existence. Such awareness dissolves arrogance and nurtures humility, devotion, and surrender to the Divine. Ultimately, all universes and all beings exist only under the will of the Supreme—whether described as Lord Vishnu, Lord Rama, or the eternal Parabrahman.


Conclusion

Hindu cosmology offers a vision of the Multiverse that is both scientific in scale and spiritual in purpose. It teaches that:

There are infinite universes, each with its own cycles of time, deities, and destinies.
Creation and dissolution occur in an eternal rhythm.
Time itself is cyclical, not linear.
All universes arise and dissolve with the breath of Mahavishnu.
From Kakbhushundi’s perspective, every universe hosts divine incarnations and sacred stories.

The Concept of the Multiverse in Hindu Cosmology

 

                                   

Hindu scriptures present a profound and fascinating vision of reality, one that goes far beyond the idea of a single universe. According to these ancient texts, our universe is not alone—there are countless universes, each emerging from its own Hiranyagarbha, or “Cosmic Egg.”

Each of these universes functions independently. Just as our universe has its own Earth, Sun, Moon, stars, and deities, so too does every other universe. Each one follows its own cycle of time—measured in Yugas, Kalpas, and Mahakalpas—making it completely distinct and self-contained.

At the center of this cosmic order is Brahma, the creator deity. Every universe has its own Brahma, who presides over its creation and maintenance. The lifespan of a Brahma is immense: one hundred Brahma years, where each year equals 360 Brahma days. In human terms, this adds up to roughly 311 trillion years. When Brahma’s lifespan comes to an end, the universe he governs also dissolves in a great cosmic dissolution known as Pralaya.

The Puranas describe an even grander perspective through the presence of Mahavishnu. With every breath of Vishnu, innumerable universes come into being. As He exhales, new universes manifest; as He inhales, they dissolve back into Him. This imagery suggests that all creation is but a rhythmic pulse in the divine breath of the Supreme Being.

A striking example of this vision is found in the Bhagavata Purana. In one story, Lord Krishna reveals to a particular Brahma the existence of countless other Brahmas, each presiding over their own universe. This revelation demonstrates the vastness of reality and provides a clear description of what modern thinkers now call the “Multiverse.”

Interestingly, contemporary science has begun to discuss the possibility of a Multiverse—multiple universes existing beyond our own. Yet Hindu cosmology has spoken of this for thousands of years, affirming that our universe is just one among countless others, each with its own destiny, deities, and cycles of time.

In essence, Hindu cosmology sees the Multiverse as ancient truth. Each universe undergoes its own creation and dissolution, guided by its own order. Yet the whole Multiverse, in its infinite expanse, ultimately arises and dissolves within the divine breath of Mahavishnu.
